Technical Writing for Scientists and Engineers

This technical writing course can be run over two or three days, it is designed to give delegates the skills and tools needed to tackle a wide variety of documents, from grant proposals to research papers. The training has a heavy emphasis on interactive teaching and much of the delegates’ time will be spent on practical writing exercises, which will be individually assessed throughout. The course is structured to gradually build up delegates’ technical writing skills, starting with short writing exercises and then moving onto more complicated documents. Technical Writing for Scientists and Engineers is designed to run with between six and eight delegates. The cost per delegate is £980 + VAT.


Technical Writing for Scientists and Engineers
Day 1 Sessions:

  • Module 1 – What is the objective of your document or report?

  • Module 2 – Overview of the various types of documents (such as grant proposals, research papers, posters, conference submissions, technical reports) that you are likely to be dealing with and the different techical writing challenges that each presents.

  • Module 3 – Know your audience – thinking about the level of information that different readers will require.

  • Module 4 – Getting across the key message in your document.

  • Module 5 – How to plan and structure your document.

  • Module 6 – Suggested layout and formats for different styles of document.

  • Module 7 – The role of diagrams and how best to use them for maximum impact.

 
Day 2 Sessions:

  • Module 8 – Technical writing techniques for developing a clear narrative flow

  • Module 9 – Creating an effective opening

  • Module 10 – Sentence and paragraph structure

  • Module 11 – Basics of grammar and punctuation

  • Module 12 – Removing scientific and technical jargon 

  • Module 13 - Tools for guiding a reader through your document 

  • Module 14 - How to edit your technical writing

  • Module 15 – Feedback and questions
