Effective Business Writing Course For Managers

A two day course, designed for middle managers and above, to develop the writing skills and tools they need to communicate clearly and effectively. We also provide a version of this course for non-native English speakers.

This course has a heavy emphasis on interactive teaching and much of the delegates’ time will be spent on practical writing exercises, which will be individually assessed throughout. This course is structured to gradually build up delegates’ writing skills, starting with short writing exercises and then moving onto more complicated documents. The course is designed to run with between six and eight delegates. We can also provide a version of this training for non-native English speakers.

Effective Business Writing for Managers
Day 1 Sessions:

  • Module 1 – What objective does your document need to achieve? What is the essential message your reader needs to grasp?

  • Module 2 – Writing an effective opening, what information must you get into the first couple of sentences?

  • Module 3 – Refresher on grammar.

  • Module 4 – Reminder of key points of punctuation.

  • Module 5 – How to plan and structure your document, including a look at various narrative techniques, such as the inverted pyramid, which can aid a clear narrative flow. This helps make your document much easier for a reader to digest and understand.

  • Module 6 – Formatting your document for maximum impact, a look at different possible layouts and templates. What works, what doesn't?

Day 2 Sessions:

  • Module 7 – How to write without business or management jargon, and much simpler solutions for expressing the same thoughts and ideas.

  • Module 8 – The differing  writing requirements of a range of documents, from emails to executive summaries.

  • Module 9 - Adapting your writing for different readers, always think what does your reader need to know, NOT what do I want to tell him or her. Generally, the wider the audience, the less detail they will require.

  • Module 10 –  Writing techniques for building up a rapport with a reader, whether that involves persuading, motivating or encouraging.

  • Module 11 - How to edit and proof read your final document, including the most effective way to pinpoint errors.

  • Module 12 – Final feedback and questions session.
